In Loving Memory of Dr. Suresh Unni, Ph.D., LCSW
Beloved Therapist, Professor, Husband, Father, Son, Brother & Friend
Oak Park, IL | Age 51

It is with deep sorrow and immense heartache that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Dr. Suresh Unni, a cherished husband, devoted father, compassionate therapist, and deeply respected professor of social work. Suresh passed away on the evening of Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at the age of 51. His loss has left a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him, loved him, and learned from him.

Born and raised in Indiana, Suresh graduated from Andrean High School before going on to earn his Bachelor of Arts, Master’s, and Ph.D. in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago—a rare academic journey that reflected not only his brilliance but also his unwavering dedication to helping others through the practice and study of social work.

Throughout his distinguished career, Suresh worked both as a licensed clinical social worker and a professor, using his education and his deep empathy to guide, heal, and uplift. He dedicated his life to supporting those in need—whether they were students in a classroom, clients in a therapy room, or individuals navigating the complex emotional terrain of life. His work reflected a rare combination of intellect and heart, and he was admired for his ability to meet people exactly where they were, offering wisdom, patience, and humor along the way.

A Man of Many Passions

Suresh’s love for life was evident in everything he did. He was known for his quick wit and an unshakable fondness for dad jokes—the cheesier, the better. Whether it was a pun about the weather or a groan-worthy quip at dinner, Suresh knew how to bring a smile to anyone’s face. His humor was infectious and comforting, a reflection of his playful spirit and deep generosity.

An avid fan of Chicago sports, Suresh remained forever loyal to the Chicago Bears, whether they were winning or rebuilding (again). Sundays during football season were often sacred—filled with laughter, snacks, and passionate commentary that echoed through the house. He also had a soft spot for Shark Week, eagerly anticipating the annual oceanic deep dive with childlike excitement.

Outside of his professional life, Suresh loved spending time with his family and friends. He played guitar with ease and soul, finding peace and joy in music. He enjoyed watching movies, both classics and new releases, and had a special knack for over-ordering at restaurants—insisting on trying just one more appetizer or dessert, to everyone’s delight. He never wanted to miss out on life’s little indulgences and was known to say, “You can always take leftovers home.”

In addition to his clinical expertise, Suresh was fascinated by holistic wellness. He was certified in Chinese medicine, reflecting his belief in integrating mind, body, and spirit for healing. His holistic approach to life and wellness extended beyond his work—he embodied this philosophy in the way he moved through the world with mindfulness, warmth, and sincerity.

A Life of Love

Above all else, Suresh was a family man. He shared a deep and loving marriage with his wife, Angela, whom he adored. Their 20 years together were filled with partnership, laughter, challenges, and triumphs. Angela, though heartbroken by the shortness of their time, holds a lifetime’s worth of memories and love.

Suresh was also the proud father of Amaya, his cherished daughter, who was the light of his life. He poured his heart into being present in her life—cheering her on in her passions, nurturing her curiosity, and modeling kindness and strength. Amaya was his joy, and he often spoke of her with pride and wonder, grateful for every moment they shared.

Suresh was a beloved son to Ramakrishnan and Sarala Unni, who raised him with strong values, deep cultural roots, and a fierce dedication to education and community. He was a loving brother to Ramesh Unni (Sajil) and carried with him the memory of his younger brother, Santosh Unni, who preceded him in death. As an uncle to Dheven, Asha, and Sahana, Suresh brought humor, guidance, and affection, often being the “fun uncle” who gave the best advice and the warmest hugs.

His extended family, including countless cousins, in-laws, and dear friends, were blessed by his presence. He made everyone feel seen and heard—whether through a thoughtful conversation, a perfectly timed joke, or a simple gesture of kindness.

A Community in Mourning

News of Suresh’s passing has sent waves of grief through the academic and therapeutic communities. Students, colleagues, and clients alike have shared memories of the ways Suresh changed their lives—whether through his patient guidance, his ability to believe in others before they believed in themselves, or simply his comforting presence.

He was a mentor to many, a steady friend to countless, and a beacon of light in times of struggle. His ability to hold space for others, while also inspiring them to rise, made him a truly rare soul. His impact will live on not just through the work he did, but through the lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.
